This art museum, nestled in an area of forest in a national park, was built with the concept of the coexistence of nature and art in Hakone . In addition to a collection of masterpieces of impressionists, including works by Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso, and a collection of Western paintings of the 19th to 20th centuries , the museum also devotes considerable effort to collecting and exhibiting contemporary art. There is also a one km-long nature trail, where you can enjoy a stroll amid the changing expressions of nature across the seasons, as well as outdoor sculptures.

Hakone Venetian Glass Museum

The Hakone Venetian Glass Museum, Japan’s first art museum specializing in Venetian glass, is located in the lush Sengokuhara district of Hakone. In addition to the museum, which showcases Venetian glass from the 15th century to the present day, as well as contemporary glass art, there is also a garden filled with seasonal flowers, a museum gift shop, and a café/restaurant which hosts live music performances, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the world of the European aristocracy.

The Hakone Open-Air Museum

The Hakone Open-Air Museum

This is the first ever open-air museum in Japan, which opened in 1969. The museum’s extensive 70,000 m² outdoor exhibition space, which is rich in greenery, is home to a permanent collection of around 120 masterpieces of sculpture by leading modern and contemporary artists, such as Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore and Joan Miró. There is also the Picasso Pavilion, which displays some of the 319 works in the museum’s world-renowned Picasso collection in rotation, as well as hands-on artworks, allowing visitors to spend a fulfilling and relaxing time.

The Okada Museum of Art has an extensive permanent collection of around 450 items, including ceramics and paintings from Japan, China and Korea. The museum boasts one of the largest exhibition floor spaces in Hakone, with five floors and a total exhibition area covering around 5,000 m2, so there is enough here for you to make a day out of it. Other facilities include a café with a footbath fed by 100% natural hot spring water, a garden, and the Kaikatei restaurant.

Narukawa Art Museum (Lake Ashi)

Narukawa Art Museum (Lake Ashi)

Narukawa Art Museum, situated in a spot overlooking Lake Ashi, holds a collection of around 4,000 masterpieces of modern Japanese painting, including works by recipients of the Order of Culture such as Kyujin Yamamoto, Ikuo Hirayama, and Matazo Kayama, as well as up-and-coming artists. As the exhibits are changed every four months, there is always something new to see throughout the year. Once you’ve finished soaking up the exhibits, you can relax and enjoy the view of Lake Ashi and Mt. Fuji from the 50-meter-long Panorama Lounge and the spacious Museum Café Kisetsufu.

Nicolai Bergmann Hakone Gardens

This is a truly unique place where people and nature intersect. Created by Danish flower artist Nicolai Bergmann, it fuses the natural wonders of Hakone with floral art, with gardens filled with seasonal flowers and installations. There is also a café on the premises called NOMU hakone, which serves Danish-style cuisine. A great way to enjoy the garden is to order some food to go and have a picnic.

Hakone Gora Park, Japan’s first French-style formal garden, opened in 1914 in Gora, the terminus of the Hakone Tozan Railway. This expansive park, surrounded by the vast sky and mountains, is a flower-lover’s paradise, with a wide variety of flowers planted throughout the grounds. The park also has a hothouse with tropical plants, a tea ceremony house, a range of workshops, cafés and restaurants, and other facilities, making it a wonderful place to enjoy a full range of experiences in one location.
